The Golden Rule while in France

Failing to greet or bid farewell in this manner is considered impolite. It’s a small gesture that holds significant weight in French culture.

When you enter any space—a shop, a café, or a market stall—it’s customary to greet with a bonjour. Similarly, when you leave, you’re expected to say au revoir (goodbye), bonne soirée (good evening), à tout à l’heure (see you later), or à demain (see you tomorrow), especially if it’s a place you frequent, like the boulangerie.
