Annecy

Somewhere in the middle of the mountains is a city, well-known and admired. Annecy. A city that takes everyone's breath away, mainly if visited from the right side. Mostly by train. Otherwise, the outskirts of this charming place can be scary, especially if visiting on a public holiday or Monday when everything is closed. Apart from that, Annecy is as charming as can be, showing off all the charm that lingers between houses, channels, mountains and the lake, and hidden cafes, restaurants, and boulangeries. With that comes something that might not be as charming as one hoped for - tourists, so the best time to visit is in September when it is still summer. But the streets are emptier, the light milder, and possibilities broader. Plus, it's much more attractive around the lake, watching all those tiny seven-year-old penguins learning how to sail and older ones how to kayak, and more.

I do not want to talk much about Annecy here as one has to live, taste, feel, and touch it to understand where the charm lies. It's not only in that one lake and or those picturesque views. It's in all the details - coffee shops, organic bakeries, restaurants, and a truly remarkable cheese shop. Someday, when the time comes, I will talk more about this place but for now, if you are planning to pay a visit, keep these places in mind:

Visit
Slake - brunch and coffee.
La source - one of the best boulangeries with great bread and pastries and a shop. Apart from the regular bread, try their banana bread, cinnamon rolls, palmier, croissant, pain au chocolate, and brioche. Everything, basically.
Aristide - another organic bakery in the heart of the center. Just a few types of bread and some pastries, but all are good and it has an inspiring design.
Nebbia Studio - my dear florist who works mainly with local and seasonal flowers around the region. She also has classes, so follow and visit.
Babeth - an exceptional and inspiring shop for all - clothes, dishes, soap, puzzles, and books. And even something to indulge in. My favorite shop in Annecy.
