Boulangerie Liepāja

This place has held a very special place in my heart – and in our family’s – for years. But this time, after not having set foot there for three years, that feeling was at least five times stronger than usual, as for me, this place is formidable in every way.

My whole visit to Latvia was planned around a trip to Liepāja, where croissants are like nowhere else. Where it feels as though France has relocated to Latvia. Where, next to that perfect French croissant, you’ll find Latvian classics like sviesta radziņš (butter horn). Where alongside traditional French pastries, you can enjoy superb Italian chocolate, Austrian and Italian wine, and exceptional coffee roasted just next door.

But most importantly, this place is a story about friends and friendship. About love and care. Conversations and laughter. Chaos and calm, all guided by food and coffee. Hours pass by like minutes. Gluten is consumed as if it’s the last day it’ll ever be available. Sugar flows like a mountain river – as does the coffee (my god that @fomins.coffee is amazing). There are never quite enough hours to enjoy it all. But at least it’s something – especially after three years. And a croissant or two tucked in a bag for the next morning always helps to prolong that feeling.
