Coffee. Matcha. Food. Lyon

Caillou

After a few attempts and a few coffees, I finally managed to taste some food at Caillou this week — and it was exactly what one needs. Simple, comforting, filling and absolutely delicious. But that’s not all. This café, even if the food and drinks weren’t good, would still be worth a visit: half of it is built into the mountain, revealing that gorgeous stone wall at the back. The design feels like a blend of the 1970s, 1980s and nowadays. Add to that some amazing coffee, a punchy, spicy chai latte (and plenty of other non-coffee drinks), and it’s truly a treat to be here.

Midori matcha café

The same goes for Midori matcha café, which has two locations — the one I love and am talking about is in the 1st arrondissement of Lyon. Its interior blends Japanese minimalism with modern touches. Everything (except the savoury dishes) and every drink (except the coffee) features matcha. From carrot cake and sponge roll to matcha tiramisu, and from a simple matcha to creative variations like Earl Grey matcha, this place is not only delicious but beautiful too.
